I have kids. Like everyone.
And I know by now that all kids behave the same way. They do not turn off the AC. They leave the bathroom exhaust fan running. They walk out of a room with everything still on, and they genuinely do not care.
I did not fix this by lecturing them.
I gave them a Goodbye button. One button by the door. It is fun, it is easy, and they press it.
That is the whole article in one story, but let me back up. Because before you fix the bill, you need to understand why it is bigger than you expected.
Your usage went up a little. Your bill went up a lot.
Most people assume the bill is a straight multiplication. It is not. In Bahrain the domestic electricity tariff is tiered, and the tiers are brutal at the top.
For a subsidised Bahraini account on a primary residence:
0 to 3,000 kWh: 3 fils per unit
3,001 to 5,000 kWh: 9 fils per unit
5,001 to 7,000 kWh: 16 fils per unit
Above 7,000 kWh: 32 fils per unit
Read that last line again. The top band costs more than ten times the first band, on the same meter, in the same house.
So when someone tells me “my consumption only went up a bit but my bill exploded,” they are usually right. They did not double their usage. They crossed a line.
Two more things worth knowing. The subsidy applies to one residential account only. A second account, or a non-Bahraini account, pays a flat 32 fils per unit from the very first kWh, with no slab benefit at all. And from January 2026, the unsubsidised electricity rate moved from 29 to 32 fils per kWh, while water went from 750 to 775 fils per cubic metre. Subsidised first and second tiers were left unchanged. (EWA tariffs, 2026 tariff update)
Also remember that in Bahrain, electricity and water arrive on the same bill. So a leaking irrigation line and a badly used AC are the same problem wearing two costumes.

Where the money actually goes

Air conditioning dominates. In some Gulf cities, AC accounts for more than 60% of domestic electricity during summer peak. (MERIP)
On the water side, outdoor use is over 30% of household consumption on average and can reach 60% in arid regions. Up to half of that outdoor water is lost to wind, evaporation and runoff, and a poorly maintained automatic irrigation system can waste around 25,000 gallons a year on its own. (US EPA)
So the two things that decide your bill are the AC and the garden. Everything else is rounding.
Now, the fix. It has two parts, in this order: measure, then act.
Part one: measure, and you do not need automation for this
This part does not require a home automation system at all. You can add it to one, but it stands on its own, and honestly it is the part I would do first.
Put phase monitoring in your breaker panel on every floor. Now you can see what is actually using the most.
But the usage number is not the real prize. The real prize is deviation.
When a circuit starts drawing more than it normally does, something is wrong. An AC is failing. A filter is choked. A compressor is struggling. And you find out from a usage alert, not from a bill four weeks later, and not from a repair invoice after the unit dies.
Same logic on water, and here it matters even more.
Put a flow monitor on your landscape irrigation valve, and another on your main water supply. Now you know exactly how much water goes into the house versus the garden.
Two things happen immediately. First, you discover the landscape is using far more than it needs. That is normal. Sometimes the irrigation is simply over-scheduled. Sometimes the landscape guy opens the valve and forgets it. Sometimes there is a leak somewhere along a long irrigation run that nobody has walked past in months.
Second, and this is the one that matters: you are out of the house and you see flow on the main pipe. Nobody is home. Nothing should be running. That is a leak, and now you know today instead of at the end of the month.
Go find it. It might be inside a wall. It might be in the bathroom next to your dressing room. At that point you are not saving money on a bill. You are saving your house and everything in it.
### The upgrade I actually prefer: smart breakers
If you are touching the panel anyway, put in smart breakers instead of normal ones.
Every breaker reports its own consumption. So you are not looking at “the first floor used this much.” You are looking at the water heater specifically. You can see exactly what that one circuit costs you.
You can switch a circuit remotely.
And you stop having mystery trips. A normal breaker trips and leaves you standing in the dark guessing what happened. A smart breaker tells you what tripped, when, and why. Overvoltage, overcurrent, leakage. Named, timestamped, sent to your phone.
This is not smart home automation. There is no app ecosystem to buy into and no protocol war to worry about. It is a simple upgrade that genuinely upgrades your life.
Part two: act with scenarios, not discipline
If you have home automation, scenarios are your best friend. Not voice control, not fancy dashboards. Scenarios.
Here is what I recommend on every keypad at the entrance of a room. Two buttons.
Welcome. Sets the thermostat to a sensible temperature, turns on the lights, opens the shades. I use 22 degrees. The point is not the exact number. The point is that the user never touches the thermostat.
Because here is what a hot person does. They walk in from the heat, they feel it, and they set the AC to the lowest number the remote allows. It does not cool the room any faster. It just guarantees the unit never reaches setpoint and never cycles off. It runs, and runs, and runs.
Goodbye. This is where the real money is.
One button. Lights off, AC off, shutter down.
People are lazy. I include myself. We all want to save energy, and if you tell someone they can do it by pressing one button on the way out, they will do it. Ask the same person to turn off the AC, then the lights, then close the curtains, three separate actions, every single time they leave a room, and they will not. Not routinely. They will forget one of them, and the one they forget is usually the expensive one.
One button beats three good intentions. That is the whole insight.
Then add one more thing that requires nothing from anybody: program the shades on a schedule. Closed during the hottest sun, open again in the afternoon for the healthy light. You are at work. Your kids are at school. The house is protecting your bill and your furniture while nobody is home.


The exhaust fan nobody thinks about
Back to my kids and that bathroom fan.
An exhaust fan does exactly what its name says. It sucks air out of your house. And the air it is sucking out is the cold air you just paid your AC to produce. Leave it running for an hour after the bathroom is empty and you are throwing conditioned air outside while the AC works harder to replace it.
It is a small motor with a big multiplier behind it.
The fix is simple and it does not require a smart home. Put the fan on a motion sensor. It runs while someone is in the room, holds for a few minutes after, then stops on its own. You can do this with a home automation system, or with a standalone sensor switch that talks to nothing and needs no app. Both work. Nobody has to remember anything.
Where to start
In order, cheapest first.
1. Fix the behaviour and the setpoint. This costs nothing. Stop setting the AC to its lowest number. Stop cooling empty rooms.
2. Measure before you spend. Circuit monitoring on the panel, flow monitoring on the main line and the irrigation valve. You cannot fix what you cannot see, and the alerts will pay for the sensors before the savings do.
3. Then act. Welcome and Goodbye on every keypad, shades on a schedule, a motion sensor on every exhaust fan. Let the button do the remembering.
4. Upgrade the panel when you get the chance. Smart breakers, per circuit.
And keep one number in your head while you do it. If your house is anywhere near 7,000 kWh a month, every unit you save above that line is worth more than ten times a unit saved at the bottom of your bill.
That is not a small saving. That is the difference between a bill you dread and a bill you ignore.
