Years ago, when I was still shifting from the computer world into smart home automation and discovering all of this as a computer engineer, I found a company called Insteon.
Their idea was clever. Send the control signal through the electrical wiring and back it up with RF, so you get two paths instead of one. More stability. I loved it, and I installed it for one of my early clients.
I ran into him again a couple of years later. First thing I asked was how his setup was doing.
“Amazing. I love it. No issues at all.”
My answer came out before I could stop it.
“Strange.”
He looked at me and said,
“WHAT? You don’t trust your own setup?”
That was a bad thing to say to a client, and I own it. But between installing his system and meeting him again, I had learned a lot. And what I had learned was this: wireless does not survive the years.
Insteon proved the point harder than I ever could. In April 2022 the company shut its servers down with no warning. Hubs stopped responding. Apps stopped connecting. The CEO removed his name from LinkedIn. People who had paid for a whole-house system woke up to plastic on the wall. (The Register, Stacey on IoT)
So, should you hire a professional? Before anyone answers that, we need to fix the question.
The question only applies to half the market
When people say “smart home,” they are talking about two completely different worlds.
Wired systems run on protocols like KNX and DALI. These are installed during construction or a real renovation. Cables, a distribution panel, commissioning software, and a licensed professional behind all of it. Nobody is DIY-ing a KNX villa on a weekend. That question does not exist.
Wireless systems run on Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, or Casambi. Devices you can buy online, unbox, and pair from your phone. This is the only place where “should I do it myself” is a real question.
Everything below is about wireless. If you are asking about KNX or DALI, the answer is already yes, and it is not close.

Start with an honest question about yourself
Here in the GCC, most of us are not used to doing our own work at home. Changing a light bulb, swapping a switch, checking a water leak from the AC. For most people here, all of that means calling someone. That is the culture we grew up in, and there is nothing wrong with it.
So be honest before you spend anything:
If you are not comfortable changing a switch in your own house, or opening your electrical panel and investigating a breaker, stop here. Call a professional.
But if you are willing to spend the time and the effort, and you understand the technology well enough to tell one protocol from another, then yes. You can probably do this yourself with Matter or Zigbee.
Just know what you are buying.
Wireless is a smartphone. Wired is a landline.
Your smartphone lasts three years, maybe four if you are careful. Then it slows down, stops getting updates, and you replace it. Your grandfather’s landline still gives you a dial tone.
Wireless smart home devices behave like the smartphone. Expect three to five years, then expect problems. Batteries, firmware that stops being updated, an app that changes, a company that gets acquired or disappears.
I am only talking about stability here. Wired systems also do far more. But even ignoring every extra feature, the lifespan gap alone is the thing nobody tells you before you buy.
The industry data agrees. Parks Associates found that 52% of DIY smart home users report setup or connectivity issues. Not people who tried and gave up. People who own the devices right now. (Parks Associates)

The four things that actually break
If you buy online, these are the traps my team keeps getting called out to fix.
1. The dimmer does not match the light. Dimmers are leading edge or trailing edge. LED drivers care deeply about which one they get. Get it wrong and the lights flicker, buzz, refuse to go low, or never switch fully off. The dimmer works fine. The light works fine. Together they are a problem.
2. There is no neutral wire in the switch box. Most wireless smart switches need a neutral to power themselves. Many villa switch boxes here simply do not have one. The device is not incompatible with your house, it physically cannot be installed. You find this out after you have opened the box.
3. Your AC never really reports back. IR blasters send commands into the air and hope. Nothing comes back. The app says the AC is off while the unit is running, because the app is only showing you the last button it pressed. Inverter units make this worse.
4. Motors kill relays. A wireless relay rated for lighting, used on a curtain or shutter motor, will fail. The inrush current at motor start is far above what that relay was built for. It might survive a month. It will not survive a year.
None of these show up on the product page.

Some protocols come with a professional attached anyway
Some manufacturers keep configuration behind an installer account. Vimar works this way. You can own the device and still not be able to fully program it without a professional login.
Casambi is technically excellent and mostly sold through professional channels, so you will be talking to an integrator regardless. And while Casambi officially supports 127 devices on a Classic network and 250 on Evolution, that is a professional system being professionally commissioned. It is not a benchmark for what you should attempt at home. (Casambi support)
Matter was supposed to end all of this. It has not, yet. There are over 750 certified devices, but Amazon, Apple and Google still implement the standard inconsistently, and the same device can behave differently depending on which hub it is paired to. (Matter status review 2026)
The part most integrators will not say out loud
Here is my honest position as a system integrator: for wireless, I would rather you install it yourself.
Three reasons, and none of them are about you.
The pricing does not work. Wireless devices are sold openly online, often below what we can buy them for. We cannot compete with that and we should not pretend we can.
The labor looks absurd. Sending an engineer to install a device can cost more than the device itself. No owner accepts that invoice, and I understand why.
The maintenance never ends. A wired system is something we do once and never come back to. Wireless is a recurring visit. Something drops off the network, a battery dies, an update breaks a scene. We are back on site, and now it is our reputation attached to a product we did not choose.
So no, I am not trying to sell you an installation for sixteen Zigbee bulbs. I am telling you the risks because you deserve to know them before you spend the money, not after.
Your DIY checklist
If you can say yes to all of these, go do it.
- You are comfortable opening a breaker panel and working on a switch safely.
- Stay under about 32 devices. This is my own recommendation, not a manufacturer limit. Past that, mesh traffic in one house gets noisy and troubleshooting gets ugly fast.
- Use one technology throughout. Do not mix protocols unless you genuinely understand hubs and bridges.
- Check the dimmer type and the neutral wire before you buy anything that goes in a wall.
- Never put a wireless lighting relay on a motor. Buy the controller built for motors.
- Accept the three to five year lifespan and budget for replacement. Do not tell yourself this one will be different.
If you understand the risks and you still want to do it, go ahead. You have my honest answer.
And if any part of that list made you uncomfortable, that is your answer too. There is no shame in it.
